The Minecraft Movie & Release Date

An upcoming American adventure comedy, The Minecraft Movie, is set to hit screens soon. Jared Hess is directing the film. Chris Bowman & Hubbel Palmer wrote the screenplay. Mojang Studios inspired the movie based on their 2011 video game Minecraft. The Minecraft Movie cast includes:

In February 2014. The game’s creator, Markus Persson revealed talks between Mojang and Warner Bros. To bring Minecraft to the big screen. Pictures. Roy Lee & Jill Messick were on board as producers. The project faced several changes in direction. Filmmakers Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney, and Peter Sollett were to direct it. In 2012, Hollywood producers approached Mojang about creating Minecraft-related TV shows. Mojang held off, waiting for the “right idea.” Two years later, someone halted a fan film’s crowdfunding attempt. Markus “Notch” Persson denied the use of the license, citing premature setup.

That same month, Persson revealed talks with Warner Bros. Pictures for an official Minecraft movie, with Roy Lee and Jill Messick as producers. By October 2014, Mojang COO Vu Bui called it a “large-budget” project, with a possible 2018 release. Warner Bros. appointed Shawn Levy as director at the outset. But, by December, he and writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney had left.

Rob McElhenney took over as director in July 2015, drawn to the game’s open-world nature. Warner Bros. agreed, offering a preliminary $150 million budget. Early production began in 2016, with a May 24, 2019, Minecraft movie release date set. Producers tapped Jason Fuchs to write the script. They set Steve Carell to voice an unknown character. McElhenney’s version withered away. He left in August 2018 due to scheduling conflicts. Aaron and Adam Nee rewrote, causing delays.

In January 2019, the producers announced a new writer and director, Peter Sollett. He had a fresh story. Messick, who passed away in 2018. Would receive posthumous producer credit. Warner Bros. scheduled the film for March 4, 2022. Allison Schroeder joined in June 2019 to co write the story with Sollett.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced Warner Bros. to adjust its release schedule in October 2020. It removed the Minecraft film from its planned date. This setback marked another hurdle in the movie’s long and winding development journey.

Casting

May 2023 saw Matt Berry in talks to join the cast. By November, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen were on board. Emma Myers signed on in December. January 2024 brought Jack Black into the mix, with the actor teasing his role on Instagram. Black had before worked with Hess on Nacho Libre. Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement also joined in mysterious roles.

Filming

The SAG-AFTRA strike delayed initial plans to start filming on August 7, 2023, in New Zealand. After the strike ended in November, production aimed for an early 2024 start. With Brooks and Hansen’s casting, filming was set for late December 2023. By mid-January 2024, cameras were rolling in Auckland. Shooting wrapped in mid-April. Grant Major served as production designer. Enrique Chediak as cinematographer.

Minecraft Movie Release Date

Warner Bros. Pictures plans to release The Minecraft Movie in IMAX theaters. Across the U.S. on April 4, 2025. This date comes after several changes. Scheduled for May 24, 2019, the date shifted to March 4, 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic and fear of competing with The Batman. This led to its removal from the schedule in October 2020. After two years without a date. The company announced the current release date as April 5, 2023.

Marketing

The filmmakers have not yet revealed the marketing strategy for the film. As the release date nears. Fans can expect trailers, posters, and other promos.
